Dr G G Hogg (Chair)

Geoff Hogg has qualifications in veterinary science, medicine and law. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

Geoff was appointed to the Board in 2008 and elected as NATA Chair on the 18th October 2016.

He has previously chaired the NATA Board’s Audit and Risk Committee.

Geoff has worked in the veterinary field as a Field Veterinarian (Department of Agriculture, Victoria) and as a Veterinary Pathologist (Bendigo Regional Veterinary Laboratory).

He has also worked as a paediatrician and a Clinical Microbiologist (Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne).

He was also an Analyst for Microbiological Analysis of Food and an Analyst for Microbiological Testing of water for contamination and Legionella spp.

He was a Director of the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit (MDU), Public Health Laboratory at the University of Melbourne until his retirement.

He is or has been involved with NATA as an assessor for Medical Testing, as the Authorised Representative for Medical, Veterinary and Biological laboratories, and was a member of the Forensic Science Module Working Group.

He is currently a Director of ITS Public Health R&D P/L.

Mr M B Callanan (Vice Chair)

Matt Callanan has a Diploma in Advanced Foundry practice from the City and Guilds of London Institute; and Australian Institute for Non-destructive Testing (AINDT) level 3 qualifications in radiography, ultrasonics, magnetic particle and penetrant testing methods. He is an Honorary Member of AINDT.

He was co-founder, Principal and Managing Director of pndt Pty Ltd which began in north-west Western Australia in 1981. The company was subsequently acquired by Applus RTD in 2007 and Matt served as Executive Director until mid 2012. In his career he has worked for steel foundries and non-destructive testing companies, achieving various supervisory and managerial positions.

In 1974 Matt became a NATA signatory and became an NDT technical assessor in 1994.

He was elected to the NATA Council in 1989 as a Members’ Representative for Western Australia and was elected to the NATA Board in 1999. He was elected Vice-chair of the Board in October 2011.

Matt brings both technical understanding and extensive business acumen to the NATA Board, and has extensive knowledge of the Association’s governance history extending over more than a decade.

Mr D R Turner

David Turner holds a Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Engineering Science and Master of Business Administration.

David holds the position of Director Engineering Testing and Certification Services at the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) responsible for the NATA accredited testing and inspection services associated with explosion protected equipment used in underground coal mines and in other gas or dust explosive environments.

Previously, David was the authorised representative and directly responsible for the operation of all Energex's NATA accredited laboratories covering electrical, temperature and humidity calibrations and measurement and for Energex's NATA inspection accreditation.

David's association with NATA goes back over 20 years through the management of accredited laboratories covering five separate fields of accreditation and inspection services, including the roles of signatory and authorised representative. He was elected to the Council in 2001 as a Members’ Representative for Queensland and continued to represent the Queensland members on Council to June 2013.

Dr J Patroni

Dr Joseph Patroni received international acknowledgement in his early career as a research scientist specialising in carbohydrate chemistry with senior roles spanning some 10 years in applied research with the Sugar Research Institute Ltd (Qld), and in industrial research management with Bunge (Australia) Pty Ltd (Melb). He has authored international, peer-reviewed papers in carbohydrate and analytical chemistry, and invented low-cost surfactant technology for the commercial production of recombinant proteins from 1978-1989. This globally patented technology enabled the first industrial-scale manufacture of physiologically active proteins from engineered organisms in Australia from 1985, and underpins the manufacture of porcine growth hormone internationally.

His experience in intellectual property development and transfer has fed a passion for mediation of intellectual property disputes and supports his ongoing advisory roles in intellectual property management.

Joseph has served in management and governance roles within the economic development portfolios of Western Australia for over 20 years in public service. His efforts have supported the planning and development of economic infrastructure as well as major public/private co-investment in scientific innovation delivering new research-intensive enterprises in the medical, biotechnology, environmental, minerals processing, minerals exploration and radioastronomy fields.

Joseph joined the NATA Board in 2012 and brings over 30 years’ experience in innovation management and governance from both private and public sectors. He served as Western Australia’s State Government representative on NATA Council from 2001 until Council was discontinued in 2014.

Inspector D Neville

David Neville commenced training as a forensic officer with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in 1991 specialising in the detection and interpretation of physical evidence, and in particular firearms related evidence. He later headed the Ballistics Unit prior to joining a project team established in 2001 to attain NATA accreditation for all the forensic services within QPS consisting of over 500 members at 36 sites. At the completion of the project he was assigned to the Quality Management Section which he now leads. David has undertaken several roles within NATA including technical assessor, member of the Forensic Science Accreditation Advisory Committee, member of the former NATA Council, and current Queensland Members' Representative.

He has been actively involved in the development of formal standards as a member of the Standards Australia Forensic Standards Committee (CH041) and as the Australian representative on the ISO Forensic Science Committee (TC272). He was also a founding board member of the Australasian Field Forensic Science Accreditation Board. In 2010 he received a Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Sector management. David holds the degrees of Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Science.

Dr Tony Landgren

Tony is a graduate in Medicine and Law from the University of Melbourne. He trained in Anatomical and Forensic Pathology in Victoria and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1990.

Tony has worked as a pathologist, lawyer and health administrator in private, public and academic practice in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. He is the Director of the Department of Anatomical Pathology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of Australian Clinical Labs, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and holds academic appointments at the University of Melbourne.

Tony is Chair of the RCPA Board of Education and Assessment and the Victorian Cancer Biobank Board. He is a board member of the RCPA and RCPA QAP Pty Ltd. His subspecialty interests include hepatobiliary pathology, renal pathology, medical education and biotechnology law.


Mr Chris Brownlow

Chris Brownlow has been involved in Healthcare and more specifically medical laboratories since 2002. He has held executive and senior management roles across a number of large organisations including Healthscope, Primary Health Care, Symbion Health and Mayne Health. Chris is currently an executive at Australian Clinical Labs, a privately owned company which operates more than 50 NATA accredited laboratories and has operations across NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Chris has a Bachelor of Business degree with combined major in management and marketing. His experience in private health and medical laboratories is centred on strategic development, business growth, business management and customer service.

Chris’s specific interests are in strategy development and execution, leadership and change management. He has been involved in a number of significant transformation projects including the design, accreditation and commissioning of new laboratories as well as major relocations and laboratory acquisitions, divestments and mergers.
