NATA urges employers to consider using accredited providers of on site drug screening and collection as part of an overall drug and alcohol program.
NATA accredited facilities is essential to promote and maintain a safe, drug-free environment.
Mr Andy Griffin, NATA Manager, Workplace Drug Testing Accreditation, highlighted the importance of using test kits and testing facilities that meet Australian Standards.
Mr Andy Griffin said "Employers have a duty of care to ensure a safe working environment, but equally as important is a demonstrated commitment to the welfare of staff. It is critical when implementing policies for managing drug and alcohol use in the workplace, that accredited providers of testing are used. It is only then that staff and employers can have confidence in the validity of results.
NATA's accreditation program provides assurance that facilities performing testing are rigorously audited to ensure that Australian Standards are met."
Whilst many employers see the benefits of using a NATA accredited laboratory for laboratory based screening and confirmatory testing the same is not so for onsite screening and collection. The onus is on providers of these services to ensure that the process is accredited.
The integrity of the process can be questioned if there is no evidence that the entire process was conducted to Australian Standards.
